Swimming Drops Dual Meet to Scranton

On January 21, 2018, the Drew University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams returned to the pool for the first time in six weeks when they hosted Landmark Conference rival Scranton. Despite their 12 event victories, the Rangers were unable to collect the win. The Drew men fell with a score of 123-108 and the women lost by a 159-76 margin.

On the men’s side, Michael Ma (‘20) took first in the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley with times of 53.48 and 2:02.45. He also joined Matheus Macena (‘21), Ryan Underwood (’20) and Jack Mahoney (‘20) to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:39.40. Macena posted an individual victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.29 and Mahoney clenched first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.53. Mach Fox (‘19) dominated the distance events with a first place finish in both the 500-yard freestyle, in 5:03.63, and the 1000-yard freestyle with a 10:25.38 clocking. Alexandre Sannibale (‘21) secured a pair of second place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200 freestyle. Angelo Angione (‘21) came in second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

The Ranger’s women’s squad was led by Jenny Stein (’18) and Mal Vishwanath (’20) who each took two wins. After tallying 248.38 points on the 1-meter board, Stein continued to sweep the diving events with a score of 270.45 to win on the 3-meter board. Stein’s score qualified her for NCAA Regionals. Vishwanath finished first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.68 and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.95. Audrey Keliehor (‘21) recorded a time of 11:49.89 in the 1000 freestyle to take the win by almost four seconds. Stephanie Cushman (‘20) placed second in the 100 backstroke.

The Rangers will continue their season next Saturday against Goucher in their last home meet of the season. Prior to the meet, the Rangers will celebrate their Senior Day where seniors Stein, Fox, Crystal Caragine, Mitchell Fry and Alli Keith will be honored.
