Men’s Tennis Opens with Ranger Invitational

Scott Veith, the new Drew tennis coach began his tenure as the the men’s team hosted the Ranger Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 17 in Simon Forum. The event featured two singles matches and one doubles match per player on the opening day. Drew faced Dickinson, Roger Williams and Wilkes.

Freshman Bryce Kennedy (‘21) had himself an impressive day as the only Ranger to win both of his singles matches. Kennedy won against his Wilkes opponent 8-4 then defeated his Roger Williams opponent 8-6. In doubles play, Kennedy was paired with Will Morrison (‘19), falling to a pair from Dickinson. Morrison went 1-1 in singles competition beating his Wilkes opponent 8-5 before dropping his match to his Dickinson challenger.  

Vineet Vemulapally (‘19) and Geoffrey Diehl (‘20) both lost two close matches in singles play. However, they rebounded when they partnered in doubles competition to post a victory over Dickinson. Meanwhile, Bryce Weizer (‘20) and Karel Raska (‘21) paired for their first doubles match as a tandem, beating their Dickinson challengers. Raska’s first career collegiate singles match went to a tiebreak before he lost a heartbreaker to the Roger Williams player; he also fell in his second match to another opponent from Roger Williams.

Concluding play for the Rangers on Saturday were the doubles pairing of Lloyd Goldstein (‘20) and Chris Thompson (‘19) who fell to a pair from Dickinson. Goldstein and Thompson both went 1-1 in singles play. Goldstein beat his Wilkes opponent 8-1, while Thompson posted a victory against his Roger Williams opponent.

Drew returned to action the following day to conclude the Ranger Invitational with the rest of doubles play. Vemulapally and Diehl went 1-1 on the day, beating a pair from Roger Williams 8-4. The first time pair of Weizer and Raska continued to struggle, dropping both of their matches. Another new duo among the Rangers, Kennedy and Morrison were also defeated in their two matches. Goldstein and Thompson once again rounded out play in a loss to Wilkes. Thompson then went on to pair with Eric Gomez (‘21) for a matchup against Roger Williams, which they dropped.

The Rangers men’s and women’s tennis teams will play their first dual match of the spring season against cross-town rival FDU-Florham on Saturday, Feb. 24 for the Battle of Madison Ave.
