Softball Continues 10 Game Skid With Loss Against Cross-Town Rival FDU

The Drew University softball team dropped a tight doubleheader to the University of Scranton on April 21 at Magis Field in Scranton, PA.

The Rangers dropped the first game 2-0 with only eight hits throughout the game. Stephanie Burns (‘21) pitched the game for the Rangers, facing off with Scranton pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Scranton was able to break through to earn the only two runs of the game. Heather Ronchi (‘18) attempted a rally in the seventh with a single to the right side, but the next three batters were retired. Adriana Rodriguez (‘21) hit a double, while Meghan Beyer (‘20) and Lauren Mastropierro (‘18) both hit singles, the only other hits for the Rangers in the matchup.

The Royals started game two with an early 4-0 lead, but the Rangers followed up with four runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Katie Grodski (‘19) started the hitting with a single, followed by a Rodriguez double. Sophie Sirota (‘21) and Megan Hulmes (‘21) both hit an RBI before Jasmine Vera (‘21) hit in a two-run triple to tie the game. Scranton pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth, but Brooke Adams (‘18) attempted a rally in the seventh with a single, however, the team was unable to finish the comeback and the Rangers dropped the game 5-4.

Hulmes was the relief pitcher, allowing two runs on only eight hits, striking out two and walking three. Cara O’Leary (‘19) started, pitching one inning, yielding three runs and a walk with four hits.

The Rangers hosted Fairleigh Dickinson University on Thursday, April 26, for the a doubleheader in the Battle of Madison Ave. The Rangers were unable to stop their ten game skid, dropping the set 0-6 and 1-2. The Rangers host their final games of the season in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28, against Susquehanna at 1 p.m.
